An intercessor is someone who stands in the gap before God for someone else. They get involved in someone else's problem and make it their own. They pray for other people. There are qualities they must have.
Identify with the situation
An intercessor must see the need for God's intervention in another person's situation. Jesus knew that we would perish in our sins if he does not intervene on our behalf. Jesus came to earth to do exactly that. "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5: 21 NIV).
Willing to make a sacrifice
Moses was another intercessor who bore the sins of the Israelites. Moses met with God on the mountain to receive God's commandments and was gone for a long time. The Israelites became restless and asked Aaron to make them gods of gold. God saw what they did and was very angry to the extent of destroying them. Despite God's promise to make Moses into a great nation, "Moses went back to the Lord and said "Oh, what a great sin these people have committed. They have made themselves gods of gold. But now please forgive their sin - but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written" (Exodus 32: 31-32 NIV).
Jesus and his disciples went to Gennesaret. "When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick" (Matthew 14: 14 NIV). Compassion streams out of divine love. If we continuously fellowship with God his love and compassion for his people will fill our hearts.
Understanding and Sensitivity
We must understand the situation from God's point of view and pray according to the leading of the Holy Spirit. What God wants to achieve is what should be the focus of our prayers. It is then that we have boldness and confidence to intercede according to the will of God for someone else.
We must be prepared to persevere in prayers until the burden is lifted. We must continue to pray for the person or for whatever burden God laid on our hearts until we prayed through.
God is Calling
God is looking for people who are willing to intercede for his people and for other countries. Can you intercede for your country, fellow citizens, and other countries?
God is looking for intercessors.
"Truth is nowhere to be found and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey. The Lord looked and was displeased that there was no justice. He saw there was no one, he was appalled that there was no one to intervene; so his own arm achieved salvation for him, and his own righteousness sustained him" (Isaiah 59:15-16)
